Tuscaloosa al dating
It used to be considered a variety of bigleaf, but most taxonomists now agree that it is a separate species.
The Gardens' 67.5 acres contains more than 25 unique gardens, 30 works of original outdoor sculpture and miles of serene paths.
Taller than Ashe magnolia, but not as imposing as cowcumber, it has tidier leaves to about 8" long, and an overall narrower growth habit.
The flowers are smaller than both the above, but nicely fragrant and borne on youthful plants.
It is not the easiest tree to "fit" into most gardens and in open, sunny areas the large leaves will yellow and become tattered by late summer.
Be patient also, as this species can take decades to flower.
